Configure push notifications on iOS and Android
Add push notifications to your notification rules and review your device-specific guidance to configure Do Not Disturb and volume overrides.
The steps to manage notification settings may depend on your device. For further detail, review the following device-specific guidance:
Tip
Always send test notifications to confirm your settings are configured as expected. You can do this for each notification type from the Push notifications section of your app Settings.
Add push notifications to notification rules
To receive push notifications on the mobile app, add the appropriate push notification types to your user notification rules:
- Mobile push default: Default notifications for all alerts. These notifications follow your Default notification settings.
- Mobile push important: Louder, more urgent notifications for critical alerts. These notifications use your Important notification settings.
You can manage your notification rules from the Settings tab of the app or by navigating to your User Profile in Grafana Cloud.
Configure push notification settings
Depending on your device, notification settings may be managed from the Settings tab of the mobile app or from your device system settings.
- Override Do Not Disturb (DND): Enable Do Not Disturb override to ensure critical notifications are never missed.
- Override volume settings: Configure Volume Overrides to ensure that notifications are heard even in noisy environments or when your phone is set to low volume.
- Enable info notifications: For less urgent notifications such as upcoming shifts and shift swap requests.
iOS-specific configuration
For iOS users, most notification settings, including sound and volume customizations, can be configured directly within the Grafana IRM app from the Settings tab.
To receive critical push notifications, you must enable Critical Alerts in your device settings. Open the Settings app on your iPhone, scroll down to Notifications, find and tap Grafana IRM, and enable the toggle for Critical Alerts.
Android-specific configuration
On Android devices, each notification type is linked to a system-level Notification channel. You can customize notification settings — such as sound, vibration, and Do Not Disturb (DND) overrides — through the system settings on your device.
To adjust these settings, tap Customize notifications in the app to open the notification settings menu on your Android device.
Recommended Android devices
Google Pixel or Samsung Galaxy devices are recommended for optimal notification delivery. These devices adhere closely to Google’s standard Android APIs, ensuring a more consistent notification experience.
Grafana aims to support notifications on as many devices as possible, however Android notification behavior can vary across devices due to customizations by different Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs), such as Samsung, Xiaomi, and OnePlus. These customizations can affect how push notifications are delivered, making it challenging to support all Android devices consistently.
Troubleshoot Android notification settings
If you don’t receive notifications as expected, review the following notification settings to improve delivery:
Disable Pause app activity if unused: Android may pause apps that are not frequently used, potentially blocking notifications.
- To disable: Go to Settings > Apps > Grafana IRM > Permissions, and turn off Pause app activity if unused.
Enable Unrestricted battery usage: By default, Android’s “optimized” battery settings can limit background activity, which can affect notification delivery.
- To enable: Go to Settings > Apps > Grafana IRM > Battery, and select Unrestricted.
Note
These settings may appear differently depending on your device model and Android version.
