From home automation to personal fitness: Check out these Grafana homelab projects
Grafana users constantly explore new and innovative ways to harness the power of their dashboards — and, in some cases, they take some inspiration home with them.
Homelabs and personal projects are ideal for experimentation with Grafana. Often, they spark ideas for Grafana use cases that extend far beyond the four walls of the office. Members of the Grafana community — including our own Grafana Labs engineers — have found ways to monitor everything from sourdough starters to the charge state of their Tesla Model 3.
And why stop there?
Join us next month at GrafanaCON 2023, our biggest community event of the year, to explore homelab projects and creative use cases for Grafana. Streaming live from June 12 to June 14, GrafanaCON will include sessions that cover a range of fun projects, including visualizing Grafana data on an LED matrix display, automating your home with a Raspberry Pi, and using Grafana Cloud to track personal fitness goals. (Because, really, how else do you prepare for a triathlon?)
Sign up for GrafanaCON today to learn more about the community’s latest homelab wins. You can also learn how to get the most out of the entire Grafana LGTM Stack (Loki for logs, Grafana for visualization, Tempo for traces, and Mimir for metrics), along with other OSS projects such as Grafana Pyroscope.
Visualizing success with Grafana dashboards — at home
Homelab hacking: Grafana on an LED matrix display
Tuesday, Jun 13 | 09:45 PDT, 18:45 CEST, 16:45 UTC
Love your Grafana visualizations? Think they’d look even better on an LED matrix display? This session is for you. Join Grafana Labs Software Engineers Ed Welch and Kristina Durivage as they demo how to build a custom Grafana panel to display time series data on an esp32-powered LED matrix display.
Get started with home automation with Raspberry Pi and Grafana Cloud
Wednesday, Jun 14 | 12:30 PDT, 21:30 CEST, 19:30 UTC
The universe of home automation is ever-expanding, and this session will help you take baby steps to get started visualizing and monitoring your home with a few smart devices, some of which you may already have around the house. Grafana Labs Principal Solutions Engineer Navish Bahl will show you what you can do with a Raspberry Pi, Grafana Cloud, Ring home security system, Ecobee thermostat, two smart power plugs (powering TVs), home router, HP printer, MacBook, and even his wife’s blood sugar monitor!
Using Prometheus, Python, and Grafana Cloud for data-driven triathlon training
Wednesday, Jun 14 | 13:00 PDT, 22:00 CEST, 20:00 UTC
Kyle Shelton is a Senior DevOps Engineer at Toyota Racing Development by day and a triathlete in his free time. And he uses Grafana in both areas of his life.
During this session, Kyle will demonstrate how he uses generative AI to write Python scripts that pull data from fitness APIs like trainingpeaks, as well as how he uses Grafana Cloud and Prometheus to create custom dashboards that monitor his progress. He’ll also share tips and tricks on how to take advantage of Grafana’s composability to build useful dashboards for personal and professional projects.
So, whether you’re a seasoned athlete or just starting out, this session is sure to rev up your dashboard game. See you at the finish line!
