KubeCon + CloudNativeCon NA 2021 preview: Attend our sessions on Prometheus, Jaeger, and more

2021-10-11 3 min

After five years leading the development of Cortex, Grafana Labs is no longer contributing to this project. In March 2022, we launched Grafana Mimir, an open source long-term storage for Prometheus that lets you scale to 1 billion metrics and beyond. To learn more, please read the TSDB announcement blog and visit the Grafana Mimir page.

KubeCon + CloudNativeCon North America 2021, the flagship conference for the cloud native community, begins today, and Grafana Labs team members will be sharing their knowledge in both online presentations and in person during the hybrid conference. (You can still register for access!)

You can find us at the Los Angeles Convention Center at booth S81. And mark your calendars for the following sessions featuring Grafanistas:

Jaeger: Intro + Deep Dive

Friday, Oct. 15, 11:00 a.m. PT

In this session, Principal Software Engineer Joe Elliott and Jonah Kowall from Logz.io will provide an overview of the Jaeger distributed tracing backend: methods for installing Jaeger, the basics of distributed tracing, and the plans for Jaeger built on top of the OpenTelemetry collector and what that means for Jaeger architecture and future development and features.

Evolving Prometheus for More Use Cases

Friday, Oct. 15, 11:55 a.m. PT

Senior Software Engineer Chris Marchbanks and Red Hat’s Bartek Plotka, both Prometheus maintainers, will team up to talk about how Prometheus is evolving along with the cloud native ecosystem. As more organizations adopt cloud native approaches, all projects are innovating and seeking improvements to keep up with demands for different deployments and architectures. Chris and Bartek will highlight advanced, experimental, or upcoming functionality to help with new use cases.

Cortex: Intro and Production Tips

Friday, Oct. 15, 11:00 a.m. PT

In this session, Distinguished Engineer Bryan Boreham and Alvin Lin from AWS will provide an overview of Cortex, the time-series data store based on Prometheus and an incubating project with CNCF. They will also provid an update on recent news from the project and a run-through of their top 5 tips for running Cortex in production.

The Prometheus Conformance Program

Thursday, Oct. 14, 5:25 p.m. PT

The standard for cloud native metric monitoring and beyond, Prometheus is a victim of its own success inasmuch as everyone claims to be compatible with Prometheus when many are not. In the best case, this leads to user confusion. In the worst case, this leads to data loss, data change, and missed alerts. To fix this situation, CNCF and the Prometheus team have launched the Prometheus Conformance Program. In this session, Director of Community Richard “RichiH” Hartmann will walk through its design, current test suites available, and current test results, and show how to apply for the official mark of Prometheus compatibility.

OpenMetrics update

Thursday, Oct. 14, 11:55 a.m. PT

OpenMetrics is now an Incubating project within CNCF, and it’s also a required part of the Prometheus Conformance Program. What does that mean? What are the updates to be aware of? How can you leverage all of this today? OpenMetrics creator Richard “RichiH” Hartmann will answer these questions and more.

Panel Discussion: CNCF Mentees

Thursday, Oct. 14, 11:55 a.m. PT

The CNCF community has proven that open source is for everyone and every contribution counts. To support this statement, there have been numerous opportunities provided by the CNCF community to get more young people and new contributors get involved in the project: GSoC, GSoD, LFX Mentorship programs, CROSS, Outreachy. This panel consists of ex-CNCF mentees & CNCF program managers: Software Engineer Uche Obasi, Divya Mohan from HSBC, Kunal Kushwaha from Civo, and Ihor Dvoretskyi from CNCF. They are going to share their experiences, how they got started with CNCF, and their journey with the internship opportunities and mentorship programs.
