What do you do at Grafana Labs?

I’m a developer on the plugins/integrations team. Why? I’m a big fan of the product! I mean, a really big fan. I admit, I’m a bit of a groupie. (Is that word even used anymore?)

What open source projects do you contribute to?

I’ve been busily working away at both the OPC UA plugin and the Grafana DIV panel (the latter more recently), but I’ve also been contributing to the Strava plugin. I’m really interested in ways to visualize geospatial data in more informative ways, but also have a keen interest in making Grafana accessible to industrial areas where they rely on OPC technologies to transfer data. They are missing out! Right now, I’m working on our InfluxDB Flux plugin.

What do you like to do in your free time?

Apart from coding?! I love to climb mountains and trail run. Last year my son and I got 17 summits in, and this year we are going for 25. We take a selfie on all our adventures, and here are a couple:

What do you do to get “in the zone” when you work?

I like to be fairly compassionate with myself. Usually I’m pretty motivated, and it just happens. Other times, I need to be mindful and take care of something important. Often, when other parts of my life are taken care of and balanced, it’s easier to return to my computer and get into the zone.

What’s your favorite food?

Lasagne! (Watch out, Garfield.)

What’s your claim to fame/greatest achievement?

My spouse and I finished the “Canadian Death Race” together. We crossed the finish line holding hands. It took us around 22 hours and 15 minutes. (We had 24 hours to complete it.)

Do you have any hidden talents?

Well, you can’t get a minor in music for a computer science degree, but I did fulfill the requirements for a music minor anyway. I play the alto saxophone (at least I did a long time ago).
