Meet the Grafana Labs Team: Callum Styan
As Grafana Labs continues to grow, we’d like you to get to know the team members who are building the cool stuff you’re using. Check out the latest of our Friday team profiles.
Meet Callum!
Name: Callum Styan
Grafana Labs Developer Callum Styan
Current location/time zone: Vancouver, Canada. Pacific time zone. As far as I know I’m still the only in the company on the west coast!
What do you do at Grafana Labs? I work on Cortex and Prometheus. I joined Grafana after contributing to Prometheus on my own time for about a year. If you use Prometheus remote write, I rewrote it to make use of the Write Ahead Log.
What open source projects do you contribute to? I’ve mostly been working on upstream Prometheus, but recently I’ve spent most of my time on adding support for accepting samples from HA Prometheus instances within Cortex.
My own “project” with the most stars is documentation of the Android ADB protocol. Most of my studies in university were focused on data communications and network protocols, so during an internship I was asked to reverse engineer and reimplement ADB.
If I had more spare time I’d like to contribute to similar projects that I use myself, such as i3 or Alacritty.
What are your GitHub and Twitter handles? cstyan on Github and @callumstyan on Twitter.
What do you like to do in your free time? Read fantasy books (Brandon Sanderson, Scott Lynch, Michael Sullivan, and Robin Hobb at the moment), take my dog to the park, cooking and baking. I run the local Go meetup, and recently I’ve taken up leathercraft.
What’s your favorite new gadget or tech toy? It’s not really new, but a good set of headphones are essential. I have Sennheiser HD650s.
What’s the last thing you binge-watched? HBO’s Chernobyl.
Do you like to code in silence, with music or ambient noise on your headphones, or with people talking around you? Definitely not in silence. I need white noise at the very least. I usually listen to music or background noise “videos.”
Favorite ice cream flavor? Swiss Orange Chocolate Chip from Elevated Ice Cream in Port Townsend, Washington, where I grew up.
